Subject: [PATCH] ht: fix build failure on -funsigned-char platforms

powerpc (and arm) have 'char' == 'unsigned char' by default.
This causes build failures on c++11:

```
$ ./configure CFLAGS=-funsigned-char CXXFLAGS=-funsigned-char
$ make
