    GCC 4.6 unused-variable warnings
    
    We set a couple of variables that later code doesn't use.  GCC 4.6
    warns about them, which our C*FLAGS=-Werror turned into a build failure.
    Worked around these by adding a (void) var; to add a dummy use.
